The purpose of this study is to calculate Strength Decrement Index(SDI) of youth adolescents in period of growth using grip strength test and to find out correlations between SDI, peak grip strength and obesity. Total 394 high school and middle students in Incheon participated in this test. Power grip 60s test was carried out to measure SDI of adolesents and SDI Equation developed by Clark et al, in 1955 was used for calculations. Body mass index(BMI) and percentage of body fat(%fat) were also estimated in obesity testing. Independent variable t-test was used to investigate variation of SDI and peak grip strength according to gender and age. And one-way ANOVA analysis was used to identify the dependency of SDI and peak grip strength on obesity(BMI, %fat). We used program, SPSS 18.0, for data processing. Correlation analysis was performed to correlate obesity(BMI, %fat), SDI, and peak grip strength. Results are summarized as follows. The effect of gender on peak grip strength was shown in all group, but effect of gender on SDI was only observed in middle school students. There is no correlation of BMI and SDI. However, Dependency of SDI on %fat was shown for female high school students. And variation of peak grip strength according to BMI results was shown in middle school male students and high school female students, whereas there is no influence of %fat on peak grip strength for all groups. SDI showed correlation with peak grip strength partially, whereas not with obesity. The result obtained from this study show that muscular strength and muscular endurance complement each other partially, but high level of muscular strength does not always indicates high level of muscle endurance.
