The objective of this research was to compare the coordination patterns of the trunk and arm in the Nordic and normal walking. 9 healthy male subjects have participated in the two different walking patterns on the treadmill. Kinematic variables of the pelvis, thorax, total arm, upper, and lower arm were analyzed by cinematography with 8 infrared cameras. The coordination patterns of the trunk and arm were approached in the concept of passive mass-damping system which is used to transfer energy from the lower extremities to the pelvis and thorax and affects in the arm swing in the sagittal plane. There was no significant difference of correlation of trunk torsion and angular acceleration of thorax and correlation of thorax rotation and angular acceleration of the arm between the two walking patterns. The correlation of trunk torsion and angle of total arm was significantly different while normal walking had a higher correlation(p>.05). The correlation of angle between upper arm and lower arm was also significantly different while normal walking had higher correlation(p>.05). However, there was no difference between the angle of the pelvis and thorax while both walking patterns had low correlation with high standard deviation among subjects. The range of motion of each segments had no difference between the two walking patterns and the correlations of the range of motion of the segments were very low in both walking patterns.
