The purpose of this study is to quantify the effect of brain injury, like stroke, on functional changes in paretic skeletal muscle. To test this, 11 persons with hemiplegia, both male and female in their 50s, were selected as the subjects of this study, and having synchronized dynamometer, electromyography and electrical stimulator, a variety of variables were measured. With regard to functional properties, the contraction time, which is the time to take to reach the maximal torque from the point in time of the beginning of muscle contraction, and also half relaxation time, which is the time to take to reach the point when the maximal torque reduces to half were measured and analyzed accordingly. As for statistical verification, repeated measures ANOVA was conducted, and in case that there were significant differences in sub variables according to the changes in ankle angle, contrast test for the rest of the ankle angles based on anatomical 0° was performed. The results of analysis were as follows; 1) Contraction Time Analysis results indicated that the contraction time of muscle was shorter in the paretic side, however, it was not statistically significant (p=.109), and when the dorsi flexion increased more, the contraction took longer time (p=.000). 2) Half Relaxation Time Results from analysis revealed that the half relaxation time was significantly shorter in the paretic side (p=.008), and the more dorsi flexion increased, the longer relaxation time became (p=.000).
