From Han Dynasty to mid Tang Dynasty, the interpretations on the Book of Odes were primarily dominated by Shixu, Maozhuan, Zhengjian, and Maoshizhengyi. However, Zhu Xi established another interpretative school on the Book of Odes, since he wrote 20 volumes of Collected Commentaries on the Book of Odes and Shih Hsu Pien-shuo to elaborate on, discover, and reveal mistakes in Shih Hsu. The interpretative school founded by Zhu Xi became more cohesive because more scholars had started to make interpretations on the Book of Odes since Fu Guang’s writing. On one hand, the school became another important source of interpretation and laid up a cornerstone for the following scholars to explore and interpret the history and truth of the Book of Odes. On the other hand, the heritage of the school influenced the consecutive three dynasties, and even the modern era. Shi Zuan Xu by Liu Yuru explores and clarifies the definitions of and implications on metaphors and symbols employed in Collected Commentaries on the Book of Odes. In addition, Shi Zuan Xu complemented Sung Dynasty’s interpretative school by doubting and clarifying rhyming fashion of the Book of Odes ; moreover, it is widely recognized that Shi Zuan Xu enhanced development of the interpretative school. Scholars in Yuan Dynasty did not just follow the footsteps of Sung scholars interpreting the Book of Odes ; on the contrary, Yuan scholars provided their own commentaries in an innovative way. Shi Zuan Xu made substantial evidence to the development.
