Report Errors

Most of the existing literature on welfare states focuses on the experiences of advanced Western democracies. Recently, however, some scholars have attempted to overcome this Eurocentric bias by exploring social policies in developing countries. In this article, I review four studies that have provided critical contributions to the field of political economy of welfare states in East Asia. By doing so, I aim to provide a comprehensive understanding of the development and underdevelopment of welfare states in the region. Based on the main arguments of the four studies, I also make some predictions regarding the future of the welfare states in South Korea.
