The purpose of this study was to examine the influence of P.E. instruction by a model of teaching games for understanding on the creative personality and sportsmanship of learners. The subjects in this study were 262 students in a middle school located in an urban community in Gyeonggi Province. They received P.E. instruction by applying a model of teaching games for understanding during an eight-week period of time, three times a week, 45 minutes each.
The instruments used to collect data were Ha Joo-hyeon(20010’s Creative Personality Test and Sung Chang-hoon(2003)’s Sportsmanship Inventory, which were both modified to serve the purpose of the study. As for data analysis, a statistical package SPSS WIN 18.0 was employed. Statistical data on Cronbach alpha coefficients, mean and standard deviation were obtained, and paired-samples t-test was conducted.
The findings of the study were as follows:
First, the model of teaching games for understanding was found to have exerted a positive influence on the creative personality variable (self-conviction, endurance/obsession, curiosity and imagination) of the students.
Second, the model of teaching games for understanding was found to have exercised a positive influence on the sportsmanship variable(respect for judgment, consideration for peers, respect for the opponent and approval of the result) of the student.
In conclusion, well-planned guidance should be provided for students to foster their creative personality and sportsmanship while they engage in a variety of P.E. activities.
