The Communist Party of China has considered religion something that had to be eradicated from the society based on the philosophy of Marx, Lenin, and Mao Tse-tung. The 1980’s Open Door policy in China was a turning point in the regulation of religion. Starting from reflection on Marxism, the government encouraged research on religion instead of promoting the atheist policy. As a result, the beginning of the Open Door policy permitted the most freedom of religious belief since the Communist Party had been established, emphasizing economical development than regulation.
However, the government turns back to the religious perspectives of Marx, Lenin, and Mao Tse-tung after it successfully hosted the 2008 Summer Olympic Games, with China’s increasing importance in the world’s economy. Scholars also share interests with the leading political party as beneficiaries of the economic development, thereby supporting the regulation of religious freedom. Although freedom of religion in China is provided for by the country’s constitution, members of the officially atheist Communist Party are strongly discouraged from holding religious faith - they cannot hold any religious belief, and they can be forced to bolt from the party when they are found. Thus, the government’s statements such as “religion and communism need to and can collaborate”, and “the government protects freedom of religion” are mere slogans that consider the domestic political need of the Communist Party rather than actual policies.
