In 1947, the city was devastated and lost the sense of the places due to the war. At that time, Aldo van Eyck Amsterdam was planned the playground project to recover the sense of the places. In this thesis, I analyze the concept and design methods of Aldo van Eyck"s the playground project and propose new play areas as alternatives in public playground environment for both domestic cities. I analyze the four playground projects through the four characters of the In-between spaces from literature reviews and case studies.
The types of playgrounds are three types which square type, street type and In-between type. The characters of In-between spaces of Aldo van Eyck"s projects are the mediated spaces, the sense of places and the overlap and the characters of playgrounds are openness, organic form and sociality.
I analyze the characters of In-between spaces of the playgrounds through the characters of In-between spaces and the characters of the playgrounds. In result, I find four characters ; the connectivity between architecture and environment, re-creation of the space, the overlap of the programs, and the overlap of the gaze.
