In many different languages of the world, there exist words standing for the meaning of ‘freedom’. Among the examples are libertas in Latin, freedom and liberty in English, liberte in French and свобода and воля in Russian. Concept of ‘freedom’ in those words may be similar to each other, but they have something in common and difference. That is probably because those words are containing characteristic cultural experience of each language-cultural area as well as reflecting the picture of the world in respective society.
Through comparative consideration, this study aims to prove that the words of свобода and воля in Russian language expressing the concept of ‘freedom’ are the cultural key words showing the exclusive Russian notion that are distinguished from similar words in other languages. For this, this study will first look into process of change in the synchronic and diachronic meaning and consider how conceptualization of свобода and воля is made through specific examples.
Through the work, it becomes possible to realize that semantics of words (especially a cultural key words) can be well analyzed and understood when cultural background is considered adding to sentence, text or discourse levels.
