In treating certain adult clients I have observed a particular phenomenon in which the client presented an imperious need to search and symbolically reclaim the lost object in the external world. In particular, immigrant clients with In this paper, I present relevant psycho-analytic theories and literature on object relations and mourning followed by a case of an immigrant client whom I had treated as a social worker at an outpatient mental health clinic in the U.S.. The case helps understand how a client who has experienced a traumatic early loss carries out her external search for the lost object and how early loss may be played out in treatment. Implications are generating useful clinical understanding and skills needed to treat clients with unresolved mourning effectively.
