Early in Korea’s modern history, the Korean press analyzed influential figures and ongoing phenomenon in various countries around the world. Doing so, Korean intellectuals used their findings to improve upon their own society eventually raising the spirit of their nation by leading a national movement to fight for Korean indepencence. This was known as the Korean People’s Liberal Movement. While exploring other foreign independence movements’ leadership strategies from other countries, Korea found a chance to loop upon their won situation. Among many countries, Turkey’s first leader, Kemal Pasha, was one that inspired them.
From the beginning of the 1920s, the founder of Turkey’s Republic, Kemal Pasha, would become increasingly relevant to Korea. Korean newspapers and major contributing mediums had frequently begun making reference to Kemal Pasha. Specifically, the Dong-A Ilbo emphasized the independence movement under the leadership of Turkish general and his reforms in Turkey, describing him as an ambitious revolutionary, a guardian of his empire, and the founder of a new democratic Turkey. Since then, Kemal Pasha has become a symbolic figure who has been influential in the modernization of Korea.
