Measuring the spine kinematics would help understand the pathology of musculoskeletal disorders. Previous studies quantified three dimensional in vivo kinematics of the lumbar spine based on CT or MR imaging. The measured movements of vertebrae with these systems had high accuracy, but motion should be acquired in limited space. In this study, we utilized a skeletal model with skin markers recorded by motion capture system to estimate three-dimensional spine kinematics. A reflective marker was attached to each spinal segment. Movements of 18 spine markers were captured using a motion capture system. Intervertebral kinematics was estimated from skeletal spine model by inputing movements of external markers. Kinematic coupling in lumbar joint was observed during axial rotation and showed the similar trends as in previous studies. Our protocol would be useful for quantifying spine kinematics.
