This paper deals with the settlement of foreign migrant workers in the agricultural sector focusing on a case of Gangwon province. On the one hand, it examines their working conditions and daily life, focused on exploitation and exclusion. On the other hand, it verifies the specificity of agricultural and dairy sector compared to manifacturing sector. From a field study, we could confirm what is generally known about the problems of this sector such as seasonal workplace change, uncertain working time, comparatively low wage. In terms of everyday life, migrant workers have very limited leisure life and human network, and live an isolated life. These conditions are a structural problem which cannot be resolved by a friendly attitude of employers and korean neighbors we could observe in a field. The elements such as communication problems and temporary stay act as a barrier to social integration. Another finding is that employment of foreign workers must be a durable phenomenon in the rural areas. It is not only inevitable, but also acceptable from the employer’s viewpoint. Despite the limits as a ‘guest worker’, the isolated existence of migrant workers is not sustainable both themselves and native koreans.
