The purpose of this study was to explore the relationship among out-of-school activities (computer use and leisure-related cultural activities), self-related constructs(self-control and self-esteem) and school satisfaction in South Korean adolescents. The hypothesis that self-esteem and self-control mediates the relationship between out-of-school activities and school satisfaction was tested with the secondary data of the Seoul Education Longitudinal Study 2010(SELS 2010) collected from 4,084 students in 74 middle schools in Seoul. The results showed that computer use negatively predicted self-control and self-esteem. Participation in leisure-related cultural activities was found to have positive impacts on both self-esteem and self-control. As hypothesized, self-constructs and the level of school satisfaction were positively associated. Students who had higher self-esteem and self-control were more likely to be satisfied with their school life. Additionally, differential SES effects on out-of-school activities were found. Students from economically advantaged families tended to use computers less and to participate more in leisure-related cultural activities. The educational implications were discussed.
