The purpose of this study was to examine research trends in Buddhist early childhood education in an effort to suggest directions for early childhood religious education. A total of 111 domestic theses, dissertations and articles on Buddhist early childhood education were selected, and the collected data were analyzed to find out about research trends by year, method and content. The findings of the study were as follows: First, there was a steady increase in the number of the studies of Buddhist early childhood education in and after 1989, and this field was consequently regarded as one of the independent areas of early childhood education. Second, in terms of the type of research and subjects, literature review was most common, and preschoolers were mainly investigated. Third, as for the content of research, the largest number of the studies dealt with teaching and learning methods, and many of them addressed religious education about Buddhism.
