The purpose of this study is to investigate the awareness of discrimination among Nikkeijin and the typology of their processes of adaption to Japanese society.
The findings of this study are as follows. First, nikkeijin have had difficulty with learning Japanese, educating their children, and finding employment due to the Lehman Brothers economic shock in 2008.
Second, nikkeijin society has suffered from generational conflict. This phenomenon is a reflection of variation in the nikkeijin community.
Third, churches play an important role in the nikkeijin community, and they help with the nikkeijins’ process of adaption to Japanese culture.
The findings of this study suggest that the nikkeijin are aware of discrimination against them, and they feels that the problems they face must be solved quickly. There is a “structural gap” in Japanese society in terms of a shortage of information from the rest of the world. Future research should be done to further analyze the role of churches in the adaption process of the nikkeijin community’s in Japan.
