The purpose of this study is to analyze the distinct characteristics and the similarities of the architectural orders of the Hangae village"s high-class houses (Hanjujongteak) in comparison with the general houses in the Joseon Dynasty period, and to define Hanjujongteak"s architectural principles by analyzing how it has adopted and resolved the special circumstances and conditions.
Hanjujongteak conforms the Joseon Dynasty"s high-class house architectural orders. The high-class houses in Joseon Dynasty can be characterized by the existence of principal buildings, the separation of the space for men and women, private composition of Anchae(women"s territory) and also the existence of ancestral shrine. Hanjujongteak in Hangae village is one of the most reserved high-class houses among national treasures with it"s unique regional features.
The principal building of Hanjujongteak has its own territory and other buildings surrounding the main building with its own territorries. Each territory has different functions but all territories are systematicly linked with one another.
The composition methods used to maintain such architectural system are "formation of building groups" , "approaches and blocks to each territories", "establishment of space transfer", and also "changes of axes" etc.
Hanjujongteak in Hangae village does not only conform the traditional high-class architectural orders of Joseon Dynasty but demonstrate diverse architectural reformation and deletion. It is the results of the people who lived in the house constantly tried to make architecture orders efficient and convenient as they faced various circumstances.
