Credit card, which was called "plastic revolution" or "the third currency" in the twentieth century, has evolved into "plastic design revolution" in the twenty first century. In the past, credit card was useful only for identification, settlement and credit granting. Recently, however, it has created its artistic value by satisfying the five senses of its user and added its function as accessory. The shape and design of credit card, which were stereotyped in the past, have become more diverse as companies have issued credit cards with their own unique color and shape as well as with various designs. This is because the critical factor to which credit card users are attracted is the design that shows artistic sense along with the function of providing service, discount and point. The design of credit card has advanced at a rapid clip. However, studies on design concept and characteristics have been insufficient. Against this backdrop, this study classifies credit cards based on their design type to examine the differentiated and symbolic functions and meaning that are intrinsic to design of credit cards. By doing so, this study intends to renew the importance of design.
