In an attempt to synthesize the effects of media and interpersonal communication on the adolescent consumers` body dissatisfaction, this study has proposed and tested a structural model by incorporating the parasocial interaction(PSI) theory with the presumed media influence(PMI) hypothesis in the research arena of body image disturbances. The data confirmed the hypothetical model. Adolescent consumers` attention to the body-ideal media was found to stimulate the parasocial interaction with media personalities, which, in turn, galvanized their integrative talk about the body ideal issue. Both the integrative talk and the media use were found to shape the perceptions that most of others were exposed to and influenced by such media portraying idealized body image; as a consequence, these perceptions were expected to force the adolescent consumers to be dissatisfied with their own bodies. Theoretical and practical implications were discussed in light of health communication.
