The purpose of this paper is to study Korean ‘－mankeum’ equative constructions’ semantic and syntactic features. For this, we consider the semantic features of ‘－mankeum’ and ‘－cheoreom’, the difference in the meaning between ‘－mankeum’ and ‘－cheoreom’ constructions, the possibility of collocation with verbal predicates in ‘－mankeum’ constructions, and the difference of the meaning of ‘－mankeum’ constructions when there is degree adverb or not.
The semantic feature of ‘－mankeum’ is different from ‘－cheoreom’; ‘－mankeum’ [＋degree, －state], ‘－cheoreom’ [－degree, ＋state], so the meanings of the two constructions are different. Verbs can be presumed to have the degree according to the aspect of semantic features of the verbs, so ‘－mankeum’ phrases can be collocated with verbal predicates without intervention of the words of degree expression. Degree adverb can come between ‘－mankeum’ phrase and predicate in ‘－mankeum’ equative constructions, where the degree adverb expresses the difference between comparee and implicit norm, not explicit norm.
