Analyzed in this article is the “Re-traditionalization” process which appeared in the rural communities of Korea after the Korean war, as it would definitely help us understand the characteristics of the Korean society. This “Re-traditionalization” phenomenon that occurred in the rural areas is ordinarily considered as a process of becoming fairly conservative in a political sense, yet it should also be considered as a phenomenon in which traditional authority and values were ‘reinforced’ on a social and cultural level. Yet this may not have been a simple return to the old ways, as it rather seems like an ideological strategy devised by the peasants who were facing an anomic situation after the devastating experience that was the Korean war.
The peasantry population, which was forced to experience a horrific war, could not maintain a revolutionary attitude and aspiration that they once had before, and at the same time was not ready to embrace and accept the Western style of life pouring in from the cities So, the only thing they could turn to was the familiar traditional way of life, through which they expected to reestablish mutual cooperation and unity in community. This “Re-traditionalization” was not a trend that went against the grand wave of modernization, but was a unique response to it and even a modernized answer to it from the rural communities.
Then again, behind such “Re-traditionalization” process, there was another kind of energy developing as well, which was a new generation of youngsters who were under modern influences. We can say that the rural society of Korea after the war were showing two flows of life, the “Re-traditionalized” way of life, and an entirely new kind of “modern life,” encountering each other, fighting each other, and merging with each other, to find an eventual balance which would help them all to overcome the anomic state of things and find a new order of life.
