Ahead of the 2013 elections in Kenya, a slogan saying “Hakuna kura Pwani” (No voting at the Coast) was found everywhere along the coast. This campaign for boycotting elections won sympathy from a large number of coastal residents. The coast people have been nursing a grievance about the distribution of coastal resources, which has been executed in favour of the upcountry people. In the conditions of economic disparity and perceived inequalities, the coast people have continuously demanded autonomy for them to be relieved from the up-country domination. The aim of this article is to elucidate the dynamics evolving around the rejection of the 2013 elections among the Digo in Kwale County of Kenya. The discussion is focused on the nexus between popular expression and political situation, attempting to analyse the dominant discourses of the separation between up-country and coast and the election boycott. The election period is a time when collective assertions for economic, political, and social justice are conspicuously manifested in post-independence Kenya. The election boycott that struck a popular chord was a way of pleading their political and social advocacies.
