This article treats the first, second, and final parts of this novel separately and refers to the relationship in her family, especially between Fumiko and her stepfather. The first part describes her younger age, during which she had little stability because her parents were peddlers and always traveled, staying in different cheap inns. However, she expressed fond memories of peddling and her love toward her mother. She also desired to show filial piety toward her stepfather, due to his love.
In the second part, Fumiko wrote a story of a woman who was older than her. However, she concluded that her real family members were her only mother and stepfather. The final part illuminates her lack of confidence in her involvement in society. Even though she had no intention of blaming her mother, she had to admit that she was born an illegitimate child. In contrast to the previous parts, her stepfather was drawn negatively because he was addicted to gambling, which caused her mother great financial difficulty. Fumiko was often eager to earn money and wanted to die. She did not need money for herself; it was for her mother. She recommended her mother to get a divorce, but she refused to do so. Finally, Fumiko ended up with living separately from her parents.
