Efforts to improve and maintain the quality of doctors’ professional work should be performed persistently. The Ministry of Health & Welfare and the Korean Medical Association define the roles and objectives of continuing medical educations (CMEs). However, there was no reports to evaluate the performance and capacity of each educational organizations. Authors tried to review the current situations of continuing professional development (CPD) programs in Korea and other countries. Finally, an expert-consensus standard for CPD accreditation was proposed as a result of this study.
The structure of CME in Korea was reviewed and examined. The current status of CME accreditation, number of CME organizations, and CME educational contents were also reviewed. Reviews of CME using IT technologies were presented. Finally, a report on American Council of Continuing Medical Education(ACCME) was presented.
Authors presented a CPD accreditation standard considering medical, educational situations in Korea. CPD accreditation in Korea could be performed through accreditation of CME educational organizations. Series of demonstration projects on this accreditation program should be done before national employment of this CPD accreditation standards in Korea.
