The purpose of this article is to examine the Chinese image materialized in the work of Voltaire’s “contes philosophiques”, who led passion for China in 18th century in France; it may be a work which investigates Voltaire’s opinion for China. The Chinese image in Voltaire’s “contes philosophiques” is very utopian. To Voltaire who lived whole life to break down intolerance, fanaticism and oppression, his own “contes philosophiques” must be understood by literary means for fighting against that things: intolerance, fanaticism and oppression. As it were, Voltaire’s “contes philosophiques” are aiming effective fulfillment of a literary subversive function in reality of the Ancien Regime, full of unreasonable convention and irrationality. And among the functions, the Chinese image is placed importantly under requisition by author: China is justly as an antipode of France that is full of religious fanaticism, prejudice, and politico-social inconsistency, to admirers of China in that epoque including Voltaire. The Enlightenment thinkers and Sinophiles are fascinated by all about China like philosophy, political system, education system etc; also, they accepted China as a model of moral and political reorganization, as a mirror verifying inappropriateness of European philosophy and systems, as a tool to break self-conceit about Christian uniqueness. In “contes philosophiques” Voltaire uses Chinese images to attack the Ancien Regime which interrupts seriously happiness of this world by fanaticism, prejudice, and intolerance.
