Employees’ physical appearance is closely associated with employer and foodservice company evaluations. The present study used natural photographs of men when clean-shaven, when displaying intermediate stages of beard growth, and with full beards to test how facial-hair-related changes in server appearance affected customer reactions. The degree of the depicted coffee shop barista’s facial hair (clean-shaven; light stubble; heavy stubble; light beard; full beard) was the independent variable, and respondents’ perceptions (i.e., attractiveness, satisfaction, and behavioral intentions) were the dependent variables. This study employed a one-way ANOVA with five levels (extent of facial hair) to analyze the data. A total of 464 U.S.-based responses were employed for data analysis in this study. Shown a barista with clean-shaven, light stubble or heavy stubble, customers were more likely to react favorably to facial hair than with employees who were light beard or full beard.
