In this study, a comparative analysis has been conducted through (1) a questionnaire-based survey and interviews and (2) practice in situations involving native speakers and contact situations through interviews, with a view to a comparative analysis of practices in using information provided to achieve the purpose of request behaviors in Korea, China, and Japan.
The result shows that the questionnaire-based survey reports similar usage by native speakers of Korean, Chinese, and Japanese, whereas the interview registers differences among them.
Through an analysis of the interviews, native speakers of Korean demonstrate a lower use of “hearer-related information” than those of Japanese or Chinese. Also, native speakers of Japanese use hearer-related information more frequently in deploying language strategy for request behavior than do native speakers of the other two languages.
In addition, through a comparative analysis of “functional element” uses in situations involving native speakers and contact situations, there is an increased use of “information related to requests” in contact situations and less tendency to provide “speaker-related information” and hearer-related information. In other words, contact situations less frequently use the language strategy using an “information provision” that is characteristic of one’s native language. In contrast, a user never attains perfect use of a language strategy in information provision with a learned language, instead using a language strategy that provides objective “request-related information” that is not closely related to the language strategy for a learned language.
