Christian leaders have positively served and contributed to churches and Christian organizations, but serious problems have occurred in the church due to their dysfunctional character. This study tries to develop an effective method to enhance Christian leaders’ character based Thomas Groome’s Shared Praxis structure.
According to psychologists’study results, leaders’ character problems derive from their negative childhood experiences. In biblical perspective, it can be viewed as the result of the human beings’ original sin. The original sin has strongly and negatively been influencing human beings’ character in two ways: whether they highly exalt or extremely lower themselves. Various character problems appear in Christian leader, but there are five distinctive character problem types; narcissistic character, obsessive character, anger type character, and risk averse character.
Five structures of Thomas Groome’s Shared Praxis are as follows; naming the present action, the participant’s stories and visions, the Christian community story and vision, dialectical hermeneutic between the story and participants’ stories, and dialectical hermeneutic between the vision and participants’ visions.
This study suggests Christian leaders’ character development strategy based on these five Shared Praxis structures. First, Christian leaders are to objectively recognize their character problems. Second, they need to have time to reflect reasons of their character problems. Third, proper words of God, which are suitable for dealing with character problems, should be selected. Fourth, it is required of dialectical hermeneutic process between the words of God and leaders’ character problems. Fifth, leaders are to take practical steps to act on what they have decided to do for character improvement. It is helpful to use spiritual formation training, self-writing, and leader small group meeting for practical action.
