Being loved for oneself unconditionally is incompatible with being loved for any reason at all. For if we love an individual for himself alone, and love alters not when it alteration finds, then no reason or set of reasons can be necessary or sufficient. When a necessary feature was lost, one would cease to love: if a reason were sufficient, one would be committed to the polyamorous phase of Diotima’s ladder. We can call this ‘the puzzle of love.’
In order to solve the puzzle, in this paper, I examine three different views in a recent time, and stress the historicity, Ideology and relationship. In short, I argue that these ideas are what lie behind the claim that love for another person ought to be de re. It is de re in the sense that it is directed towards that very person who shares exclusively unique historicity with me. It is one thing to love a particular person and quite another to love some properties that s/he happens to possess.
