The purpose of the study is to develop a school botanical garden project that can foster healthy relationships between students and plants and to examine how this project facilitated students’ participation in, sense making of, and attitudes toward learning. Employing qualitative research approach in terms of generating and analyzing data, the study was carried out with two environmental science classes at a middle school located in Gyeonggi-do. Drawing upon place-based pedagogy and conceptualization of plant-human relationship by Lewis(1996), the ‘school as a botanical garden’ curriculum was developed which utilized school forests as the context of environmental learning. The project facilitated diverse student-plant interactions, progressing from being observational in nature at the beginning and then becoming more participatory as it proceeds. The study also illustrates the complexity of student-plant relationships that students showed as they participated in the project. First, it describes bidirectional interactions between students’ everyday experiences of plants and their science learning of plants in class, i.e., how the project encouraged students to bring their everyday experiences into learning while it supported students to make sense of science learning within everyday contexts. Second, the study discusses diverse aspects of student-plant relationships such as emotional connections, sense of responsibility, sense of place, and expanded meaning of place in everyday contexts. Further, it discusses how students’ attitudes toward learning has shifted to be more accommodating and active as learners during the project.
