In this paper, focusing on the achievements and limitations of Korea"s modern historiography after national liberation, I contemplate which direction Korean historiography should embark on from now on and how the axis system o f Korean historiography could be r e-adjusted. It is argued that t here is a need to break away from the so-called “Colonial perspective on history” discourse and the negative-dismissive “a-historical perspective” that emanates from it. This paper suggests that we have to exert ourselves to build an autonomous Korean world-view based on historical truth by constructing a “real historical perspective” that is affirmative of “I” and “We”.
Essentially, history is an assertion, claimed by the living. Accordingly, a perception that attacks those “others” to which the “I” has no direct relationship cannot be called a historical perception. Only when the “other” is recognized respectfully as one object, historical deeds truely become possible. In the chaos of the natural world that grounds on the never-ending competition of existing enemies, only the human was capable to create a life with a predictable order. This is culture. And it is exactly the high level of understanding for this culture that forms history. While the three East Asian countries of Korea, China and Japan are cooperating with each other, they should build a common world view on top of the three pillars of their respective own system of “true” historical understanding. Only then the promise of a coexisting peace and the joy of common prosperity can be fulfilled.
