The Cavum Septum Pellucidum(CSP) is a potential midline space bounded by the two leaves of the septum pellucidum. It has been evaluated as a putative marker reflecting early developmental disturbances particularly of the limbic system. Until now, the mechanisms by which the septum pellucidum closes and by which a CSP is maintained are still not completely understood, but fusion of the laminae depends on the normal development of surrounding structures, particularly the hippocampus and the corpus callosum. While the presence of a CSP after birth appears to be a normal variant in the population, recent studies suggest that an enlarged CSP serves as a marker of disrupted neurodevelopment and has been linked to several neurodevelopmental and neuropsychiatric disorders, including bipolar disorder, Tourette’s syndrome, antisocial personality disorder and psychopathy, affective disorders, and most notably schizophrenia. Therefore the author reviewed the prevalence of abnormally enlarged CSP for several psychiatric disorders, and described the relationship between CSP and some psychiatric disorders.
