This paper investigates the production patterns and errors of English /z/-/?/ in three different positions (i.e., initial, medial and final) by Korean learners in two different proficiency levels (i.e., beginners and advanced). The manner of articulation of the segments was examined through the waveform and spectrogram analyses. The results revealed that the similarity between L1 and L2, proficiency levels and position influenced the production patterns and errors. In addition, universal phonetic phenomena were also in play. Thus, Korean learners were more likely to show the error pattern of affrication in the initial position, where strengthening was frequently observed. On the other hand, frication was more likely to occur in medial and final positions where weakening is more prevalent. Overall, the findings indicate more consistent patterns for the advanced than for the beginners.
