As a subject of historical research, war was considered as male-dominant event and examined as such. Women at the time of wars were generally interpreted as victims or outsiders who could not control the violent situation.
This stereotype applied also in interpreting the French Wars of religion. Recent historians, however, started to pay attention on noblewomen as participants in the French wars of religion. The nature of the French wars of religion was basically civil one, so not the state but the various noble families played main roles. Consequently, the noblewomen who had been in charge of financial affairs in noble household took great responsibilities and rights at the scene of warfare.
Some noblewomen who became familiar with the violent culture of war-making could expand their roles as military agents, like adviser, informants and conspirators. They made best use of noble network which was built by marriage and patronage system to strengthen factional relationship. In this way, quite a number of noblewomen could take an active part to assist the decision-making process of their communities.
Furthermore, several noblewomen in notable noble families could shape public opinion and justify their cause for the war. The Guise women in Paris under the League would be best example for noblewomen’s far-reaching political role. The political activities of the Guise women demonstrate the possibilities and limitations of noblewomen’s participation at the time of the French wars of religion.
