The advent of the first talkie the Story of Chunhyang in colonial Korea in 1935 has played the role of a historical turning point to create a new chapter of Korean film history. In this paper, however, paying attention to the fact that the Story of Chunhyang did not make appearance in the colonial Korean film scene all of a sudden, I concentrate on the talkie screenings in colonial Korea. That is why I expand the time for my research from 1926 when a talkie was firstly introduced, to 1930 when colonial Korean theaters started to establish the talkie system, and to 1936 when Japanese theaters equipped with the talkie system in colonial Korea became the three biggest theaters in the Ky?ngs?ng entertainment scene. I suggest that the practice of colonial Korean talkies should be understood in the relationship between Western cinema and Japanese cinema. In addition, both introduction of the talkie system and the attempts to produce talkies went simultaneously in the colonial Korean entertainment scene. Especially, I discover a new fact that the PKR sound system developed by Lee Pil-woo is not a recording system for the production of the Story of Chunhyang, but a talkie screening system.
For probing into the practice of talkies in colonial Korean cinema, I investigate cinematic culture including film discourses and screening spaces, besides the history of Korean film production, and also employ comparative film history which I set up colonial Korean cinema within the triangle structure of Western cinema and Japanese cinema. This research method will be meaningful in the academic field of Korean film history.
