Through the Muselmann which is a mark of Auschwitz-Birkenau, meaning ‘a walking corpse’ or ‘Homor Sacer’ considered to be a hollow life, what should we worry about today? At this point where the judgment that the question above is directly connected with ‘what is human being?’, I understand that Edith Stein expressed a best theory on human being in her main work Der Aufbau der menschlichen Person(Hrsg. von L. Gelber und M. Linssen, Herder). The work certainly illuminates the central idea of Edith Stein, who ironically died in Auschwitz-Birkenau.
In this paper, although there are various interpretations of Descartes today, I attempt to lay bare Descartes’ philosophy of subjectivity criticized by Heidegger and Descartes’ theory of life from the perspective of Bergson, and examine Martin Heidegger’s Descartes and Henri Bergson’s Descartes from the perspective of philosopher Edith Stein(1891-1942). On the one hand, I try to chase after what challenge was make to Descartes’s dualistic substantialism and life theory by the 20th century German philosopher Edith Stein. On the other hand, in order to appreciate Descartes’ thoughts in a proper way, I attempt to reveal indirectly what relation those ideas have with the idea of Heidegger who was Stein’s colleague and had interchanged many ideas with her and, at the same time, what connection those ideas have with Bergson’s idea. By means of considering how a contemporary philosopher Edith Stein had struggled to overcome Descartes’ ideas, I conclude that on the one hand, modern philosophy and contemporary philosophy have a point of contact as well as discrepancies, and on the other hand, combining a modern philosopher Rene Descartes with a contemporary philosopher Edith Stein can open a new chapter for the history of philosophy.
