The author asserts that Donghak (the Eastern Learning) is the most creative synthetic body of religious thought, which has integrated different Korean indigenous religions such as Confucianism, Taoism, Buddhism and even Shamanism. Donghak was also influenced by the Western Learning (Catholicity). Donghak, as the most creative synchronized body of these religious traditions, provided a unifying thought to the people in Korea who were threatened and insecure under the influences of the Japanese imperialism and of the corrupt and inefficient Chosun government. The traditional religions such as Confucianism and Buddhism in Korea were not able to cope with troubles that Chosun and its people had faced in the "tensed world" of the late 19th century, mainly due to the “atonic world” view of these religions. Choi Jaewoo, the founder of Donghak, presupposed a "tensed world" and constructed his religious thought based on the such a view. a world, where different subjects or actors such as Donghak peasants and Japanese colonial powers struggled against each other.
The author approaches the idea of justice from the perspective of historical subjects. In this study, justice is understood and analyzed from the perspective of the Donghak revolutionary people mainly including peasants. Justice, an ontological and ethical entity, requires its bearers, and the latter become the subjects that realize justice in history. The author employs four categories appropriate to understand justice in the times of Donghak movement. They are order, equality, freedom, and power. The author emphasizes that the “subjectivity approach” makes the study of justice more relevant historically and practically because the subjects exist in historical and social locations. The author attempts to interpret those four elements or categories of justice from historical subjects such as Donghak people, Chosun’s elites, and Japanese imperialists.
