This study examines the features of complaint consciousness and behaviors of Korean learners of Japanese focussing on the differences between Japanese and Koreans at the contact situation. The data was collected through two surveys; the ‘Discourse Completion Test’ and the ‘Japanese native speaker evaluation survey’. The results are as follows:
(1) Under the same situation, Korean learners of Japanese tend not to feel complaint towards their close friends or elders.
(2) When examining the way to express discontent, Korean learners of Japanese usually express to close friends by way of verbal language. And they usually express discontent to peers by both verbal and nonverbal means. However, Korean learners of Japanese usually do not express discontent to their elders.
(3) The expressions of complaints by the Korean learners of Japanese tend to be evaluated negatively by Japanese native speakers. It is found that the “scolding” and the “beat around the bush” methods of Korean Japanese learners are the main reasons for the negative evaluation by Japanese native speakers. And additionally “harsh words” against a person of the same age, and “impolite words” towards elders were also a factor in the negative evaluation.
This study will be helpful to research about Japanese education and also contribute to deepening the mutual understanding between Korea and Japan.
