In the general sense, the word sam?di means putting together neatly, indicating a perfect combination. We find it used in this sense in the R?m?yana of V?lmiki where a conversation between Laxmana and T?r? is reported. and the statement of Laxmana is said to involve a perfect combination of appropriateness and meaningfulness, and the word sam?dhi is used to mean this is perfect combination.
In the technical sense, the word sam?dhi has appeared in yoga literature. There it indicates a state of meditation or deep absorption of mind(chitta).
An interesting fact about the word sam?dhi is that in earlier times there was another word more prevalent for indicating the state of meditation. This is word dhy?na. We find it used in the Vedas at several places in the prayer of the vedic seer, while the word sam?dhi is hardly referred to.
Pata?jali gives the definition of sam?dhi which shows that he had a clear distinction between dhy?na and sam?dhi in his mind. When dhy?na illuminates the object in such way that only object appear and the own nature of mind or meditative cognition does not appear at all then we call it sam?dhi. In sam?dhi, the mind as it were merge into the object and loses as it were its on identity. Here the expression “as it were”is important because it suggests that mind does not cease to exist in sam?dhi but it only appears to do so.
Pata?jali uses the expression “as it were”(iva) because he defines Yoga or sam?dhi as the cessation of the modification of mind and not the cessation of mind itself.
