Both Benedict de Spinoza and Friedrich D. E. Schleiermacher certainly belong to those who are the most controversial figures in the whole Western religious world. Questions on Schleiermacher`s relation with Spinoza further increase difficulties and complexities to scholars. Spinoza had been mostly criticized as "a dead dog" or "Satan Himself" in Prussia during the end of the eighteenth century. However, this situation experienced a dramatic change through “Spinoza Pantheism Controversy”. One of the unexpected results of the Controversy was the appearance of Spinoza enthusiasts such as Goethe, Kant, Schleiermacher and others. Some of them honored Spinoza as “the arch-theist", "God-intoxicated person” or other expressions. As a matter of fact, Schleiermacher praised Spinoza as the most religious master in the whole world in his Speeches or On Religion: Speeches To Its Cultured Despisers of Religion(1799). Thus many scholars have criticized Schleiermacher as a Spinozist, which means that he is a pantheist or an atheist. The purpose of this research is to analyze Schleiermacher`s understanding of Spinoza through the process of Schleiermacher`s interest in Spinoza, his presentation on Spinoza in the Speeches, its subsequent editions and the two editions of the Christian Faith.
Schleiermacher had a strong interest in Spinoza since 1786, when he was eighteen years old, directly read his Ethics in 1792, and reached his convictions before 1795 that Spinoza was the greatest figure in religion. Thus, he praised Spinoza in the Speeches despite the reality that the Prussian national religion prohibited any non-traditional thoughts through its ruthless censorship at least since 1788. Yet, Schleiermacher had kept insisting that Spinoza was the greatest in his Speeches and Christian Faith and defended himself, saying that he only praised the piety but not the philosophy of Spinoza. However, Schleiermacher had continued to use the “one and all”(hen kai pan) formula, which is the secret sign for Spinoza`s philosophy. Thus Schleiermacher praised both the piety and philosophy of Spinoza, and finally confessed in 1827 that he had loved and admired Spinoza since 1792, when he first read Spinoza. Now it is up to the readers, whether they criticize or defend Schleiermacher, who had loved and admired Spinoza.
