The purpose of this study is that to examine the relationship of faith and rituals in religion, checking the contents and lists of rituals of the Cheontae Order in Korea. And, by this, I try to understand the direction of faith which the Cheontae Order aims.
For this reason, in the first chapter, examining the main literatures and histories of the Cheontae Order, I pointed out that it is necessary to study rituals of the Cheontae Order, In the second chapter, classifying the main lists of ritual of the Cheontae Order, I examined the difference between the other Buddhist organizations and the Cheontae Order.
Then, in Chapters 3 and 4, I examined the spaces and contents of rituals in the Cheontae Order. And, by this, I pointed out that faith of the cheontae Order is concentrated in Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva (the Goddess of Mercy) and memory of the Cheontae Order` founder.
As a result, the Cheontae Order aims to faith on Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva and the Cheontae Order` founder constructing various spaces and contents of rituals. And, through these, the Cheontae Order has been making a feature that was distinguished from other religions. Viewed from this point, rituals are a strategic tool to maintain and enhance the self-identity of the Cheontae Order.
This research was done through several interviews and field survey, as well as literatures including previous researches. I expect to make this research a small contribution to understand the rituals of the Cheontae Order.
