The purpose of this essay is to inquire into the relation between experience itself and its linguistic expression in Merleau-Ponty"s thoughts during the early and middle phases of his philosophy. Merleau-Ponty posed this question as fundamental from his early main work, Phenomenology of perception. For him, this question of the relation between experience and its expression is that of the relation between perception and language. He analyzed the nature of language with our actual experience of it and, as a result, he discovered language as a perception. Meanwhile, he looked for the final basis of language in a pre-linguistic being; He denied a structural identity between perception and language as a result of self-consciousness [“cogito tacite”]. This means that philosophy becomes an auto-amplification of linguistic significations, which has nothing to do with perception. However, Merleau-Ponty studied the problem of expression in earnest after writing Phenomenology of perception, and he criticized his own early position by the root. Now, it turns out that the expression is not a result of constitutive consciousness, but, conversely, the consciousness itself is expressive. The ‘institution’ here is a universal logic of expression. Merleau-Ponty established a structural identity of perception and language definitely with this concept. Language as expression is structurally equal to perception as expression, and this means that language has a dimension of meaning which is expressed g ‘perceptually’. The phenomenon of creative expression shows directly such dimension of language. The outcome of this study on expression in the early and middle 1950s identifies a new concept of philosophy in The Visible and the Invisible.
