Sidney’s Apology for Poetry is generally known as a refutal to Gossen’s The School of Abuse which mainly criticized the current drama of the Elizabethan English theater. Partly as an answer to Gossen, but more as a reply to the general criticism on poetry which originated from Plato’s Republic, Sidney’s Apology provides a comprehensive synthesis of the Renaissance conception of the ideal aim of literature. Especially, the moral value of poetry as an enlarger of the human mind is eloquently summarized in the book. According to Sidney, poetry has served as the first light-giver to ignorance. He also presents the competition between philosophy, history, and poetry, which the poet finally wins by providing both the philosophers’ precept and the historian’s example. The ideal poet that Sidney envisages in Apology is maker, not as imitator. More importantly, the book suggests that the ideal poet can create a second nature which is analogous to Coleridge’s natura naturata, found not in created nature but in creating nature. Thus, it can be said that although the idea of poet as a creative maker reaches its flourishing in the Romantic writers, it is Sidney who bears witness to its birth.
