The purpose of this paper is to review the quarrel about literary mimesis between Plato and Aristotle. In his Republic, Plato expels poets from his ideal state, believing that philosophy rather than literature can attain to the ultimate truth. Plato’s critique on literature is based on his belief that poetry does not offer reality but unreal imitations. In contrast, Aristotle contends that literature can also emphasize the general truth emerging from the particular. The two philosophers’ different views on mimesis, however, can be resolved into a wider conception of mimesis not only by Renaissance theorists but Romantic writers as well. From the Renaissance through Romanticism, the meaning of mimesis is served as a more universal and philosophical term, “representation”. Thus, it is noticeable that the modern concept of representation is drawn from the ancient debate on mimesis between Plato and Aristotle.
