Beautiful forest scenery has become an important requirement for national status in Korea, 64% of its lands occupied by forests. The purpose of this study is to identify types and characteristics of beautiful forest sceneries in Korea. In this research, 617 winning photos in a total of eleven photography contests (year 1993-2012), held by Korea National Park Service, are used to examine forest sceneries in Korea.
As the results of this study, the types of forest scenery can be divided into 3 main categories: two large classification categories with locations of viewpoints, 6 medium classification categories with main targets of scenery, and 22 small classification categories with minor targets of scenery. The characteristics of forest sceneries based on the classification types of beautiful forest sceneries can be described as follows: 1) the importance of branch ridges as viewpoint, 2) the importance of a sense of the season, and 3) the importance of waterscape and curious rock peaks. Branch ridges create generally excellent and diverse forest scenery, and elements for a sense of four seasons bring variety to the forest scenery in same places.
