This study finds that Comenius was a pioneer of lifelong education, and analyzes the lifelong education principle based on his books, ‘Didactica’ and ‘Pampaedia’. Even if the lifelong education has become a prevailing concept today, it was emphasized by Comenius 340 years ago.
Comenius’ principle of lifelong education was found in his pansophism. He emphasized the pansophic principle that everything must be taught to everyone through every method. The pansophic principle signifies that education should be done through lifetime.
Comenius recognized everyone as an object of lifelong eduction, and considered a lifetime of a person from cradle to grave as a school. Thus, he named the lifetime as the school, and classified the school into several phases from birth to death in terms of the periods of life.
Comenius named the lifetime of human being as school, and presented eight phases of lifelong education. These eight phases include a birth school, an infant school, a childhood school, an adolescent school, a young adult school, an adult school, an elderly school, and a death preparation school.
The purposes of lifelong education manifested in Comenius’ pansophic principle were to help everyone to know everything for wisdom, to do good things ethically, and to be matured in their personality to believe in God, the creator. Additionally, the purposes include restoring human nature created in God’s image, earthly salvation on earth where they make living, and eternal salvation. The pansophic principle emphasizes that an earthly life is a preparation for a life in heaven.
In conclusion, several suggestions will be made. Firstly, it will be suggested that Comenius is a pioneer of modern education. Secondly, it will be suggested that his lifelong education in terms of the eight phases of lifetime should be applied in current educational systems. Thirdly, it will be suggested that human’s whole salvation should be paid attention to which can be disregarded in the lifelong education.
