Hangeul’s transition from a traditionally vertical script to a horizontal script is still incomplete. While the regular and rational nature of Hangeul makes it easier to change direction, artifacts such as proportional syllable height still bias the script to vertical use. Additionally, in modern times there is the added complexity of multiscript typesetting situations where the design of other scripts must also be taken into consideration. How can we complete this transition? Conversely, is it possible to design a typeface that can be used effectively in both vertical and horizontal situations?
This study aims to answer the above questions through an examination of four early examples of horizontal multiscript typesetting and discussion of their unique solutions to the problem of modern Korean typesetting.
