The relationship between the capitaland the provinces has emerged as an important issue in recent studies of eighteenthcentury Korean society. In line with this trend, this article addresses the cultural divide between the capital and the provinces through the case study of Hwang Yuns?k, a local intellectual, and his interactions with oligarchs based in the capital.
Particular attention is paid to two issues. The first issue concerns the ways in which Hwang made connections with his capital-based associates. The second issue is about the nature of those relationships. In the light of those two issues, this study examines the relationship between capital-based and locally-based intellectuals at the time more broadly.
