This paper investigates the nature of -(n)un by discussing its characteristic of showing root phenomena. First, it is claimed that -(n)un has three different discourse functions and that the degree of its sensitivity to the root restriction depends on which function it conveys. Then, the function that shows the total sensitivity to the root restriction, i.e., topic introduction, is discussed in more detail. Ultimately, this study provides strong counterevidence to the standard view that -(n)un is a mere topic and/or contrast marker. Rather, the meaning/function of -(n)un is claimed to be best captured by the notion of imposing salience.
