During the English Industrial Revolution, women were often regarded as ‘the angels in the house’, which meant that a true woman had to devote her life to the well-being of her children and husband. Therefore, women’s lives in the separate spheres were forced into the cult of domesticity. The studies conducted so far assumed that the concept of ‘the angel in the house’ was a product of the evangelism.
However, the concept of ‘the angel in the house’ was rather compulsive in England during the Industrial Revolution. Women at the time of lived in a male-centred world, but that did not mean that they were dependent on men. First of all, although there were not many, there were woman preachers. Evangelicalism was right there. It provided women who experience the grace of conversion with the opportunity to read and interpret Bible, and hence, propagate Christianity.
The evangelism in England at the time of the Industrial Revolution enabled women to become not only the angels who do housework but also the God’s instruments to change the world. This is well represented in the religious novels. Women writers in England at the time were not popular, but they tried to change the world in a similar way that Micaiah delivered God’s message to Ahab.
In this sense, it could be concluded that the evangelism in England during the Industrial Revolution did not force women to stay at home, but it was an origin of feminism which protested against the male-centred English society.
